When taking professional portraits, connecting with my subject not only makes the session more enjoyable but also results in a more impactful image.
Getting a professional portrait taken can be intimidating for those of us who aren’t public figures used to the scrutiny of a camera lens, but Benson Photo tries to make the process as comfortable and genuine as possible—sometimes even fun. Cultivating a warm, friendly environment at each session helps produce the ideal portrait: one that shows the subject as confident, approachable, and capable.
Even before the session, the goal is to make the subject feel true to themselves, starting with attire and accessories. This isn’t a formal job interview that requires a dark suit and conservative styling, so my subjects are encouraged to show off their own sense of style. Feeling like your most authentic self produces a smile and pose that are equally natural and sincere.
A professional portrait session is anything but intimidating when you feel free to be yourself.
As I’m setting up for our session, I’ll often ask my subjects about their work. This puts them at ease and reduces nerves that can lead to stiffness in their expression or pose. In addition, learning about their projects—some of which I may have already photographed—can influence the choice of background. For many creatives, posing in front of one’s own work not only gives them something easy to chat about during our portrait session but can also be a helpful conversation starter at a future interview.
