As summer draws to a close, I want to enjoy outdoor spaces as long as I can. This pavilion is the perfect “extension” to a late summer evening.

Summer often feels like it leaves us too abruptly, but there are ways to keep the party going, even as the fall months approach. This Main Line residence built a literal extension to its summer experience, adding a pavilion that can entertain guests long after the sun has set. We shot this home addition at twilight, when the pavilion’s lights would provide a nice contrast against the darkening sky.

Ceiling lights and a fireplace keep the party going all night long.

Multiple clients means balancing different priorities and goals, but we were able to satisfy builders, landscapers, and architects alike on this shoot.

The pavilion glows like a firefly in the darkening sky.

Props also helped us set the scene for how this pavilion might be used. In addition to the throw pillows already on site, we added some blankets and a wine bottle and glasses for ambiance. We also moved a poolside basketball net that would have obscured drone views of the property.

The blankets, place settings, and wine glasses helped set the scene for a nice afternoon in the pavilion.

Moving the basketball net from the side of the pool kept this drone shot clean and unobscured.

We served three clients with this project: the architect, JMS Architecture; the builder, E.B. Mahoney; and the landscaper, Doyle and McDonnell. This required a bit of balancing, as each client had its own goals and needs to address. While architects typically wish to highlight custom designs and features, builders want to show off the craftsmanship and material quality; landscapers, too, want to draw attention to their careful placement and handiwork. Benson Photo took shots that would fulfill everyone’s needs.

The afternoon sun shows off the pavilion’s construction.

This shot of the pool area shows off the lush greenery next to the pavilion.
