Directing and positioning a few dozen high school students was a fun way to bring life to a new gathering space.

A little bit of post-production magic helps a lot when photographing large groups of people.

Students come and go through the renovated lobby.

I’ve written before about how I edit my shots in post-production to maximize the quality of the resulting image. This is particularly helpful when photographing large groups of people, as I did for this student union renovation.

The new student union at the Delaware County Christian School has two levels for schoolwork and socializing alike.

Students can gather more informally on the mezzanine level.

As anyone who has ever taken a group photo knows, not every shot will feature each person in the most flattering pose or expression. In a shoot like this, I keep my camera on a tripod and take several frames in succession. Afterwards, I select the best poses from each group of frames and edit them together to create a more cohesive-looking final image. If there’s any empty space, I can also fill in additional people from other shots.

For a shot like this, I combined several frames to preserve the best poses of the bunch.

I added a few more students going up the stairs…

…and chose frames where the students looked more engaged in their work.
