I’ve observed that in the rush to create that which is new and different, we sometimes abandon that which may be old, yet still relevant. Clients JMS Architecture and E. B. Mahoney Builders worked in collaboration to utterly transform a tired ranch house— a multi-generational family homestead— in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, while remaining true to its foundational roots in Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style.

Opening up the house with lots of glass doors and bumping up the ceiling were some of revitalizations that helped to present a visually and functionally new house that maintained classic echoes of its 1950s past.

In photographing the project, twilight proved to be the perfect time to show outside and inside at the same time. And my ever-trusty and increasingly versatile drone was employed to show off the ample surroundings and see into the house.
